VO2 max

What it is

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during exertion. It is the standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness.

What is currently understood

The association between cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality is among the strongest and most replicated findings in exercise science. It is trainable at any age.

What is not established

Wearable estimates of VO2 max are approximations, not lab measurements. Precise targets for individuals remain a matter of judgement, not formula.

How it comes up in coaching

It is one of the core numbers we track, because few metrics carry as much long-term information. Coaching builds the training that moves it and verifies progress on a defined schedule. Nothing here is a recommendation.
