What it is
Sleep architecture is the structure of a night's sleep — the cycling between light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Each stage does different work. Total hours alone do not describe sleep quality.
What is currently understood
The role of sleep stages in physical recovery, memory consolidation and metabolic regulation is well established in human research. Consistent timing and sufficient duration are the strongest-supported levers.
What is not established
Consumer wearables estimate stages imperfectly, and the clinical meaning of small night-to-night stage fluctuations is often overstated in marketing.
Regulatory status
Not applicable — this is a lifestyle and behaviour topic, not a regulated product.
How it comes up in coaching
Sleep is the first thing we fix, because everything downstream — glucose, training adaptation, mood, appetite — runs through it. Coaching builds the routine and reads the wearable trend rather than any single night. Nothing here is a recommendation.
