Protein intake

What it is

Protein intake is the daily amount and distribution of dietary protein. It is the raw material for maintaining muscle, and muscle is central to metabolic health and ageing well.

What is currently understood

Human research supports higher protein intakes than the minimum dietary allowance for people who train and for older adults, particularly spread across the day. This is one of the least contested topics in nutrition science.

What is not established

Precise individual targets and the ranking of protein sources are still debated at the margins. Most popular claims of harm from higher intakes in healthy people lack support.

Regulatory status

Not applicable — this is a lifestyle and behaviour topic, not a regulated product.

How it comes up in coaching

Protein is usually the first nutritional variable we set, because it underpins training adaptation and body composition. Coaching sets a target from your actual intake data and makes it hold. Nothing here is a recommendation.
